PRACTICE EXERCISE(S) AND SOLUTION(S)

SCENARIO EXERCISE SHEET NO. 1 (CPT Wandrick)

Title:  Soldier in need of intervention-Soldier witness death in first convoy and needs help.

Introduction:  Soldier was gunner and missed the opportunity to kill the trigger man for the IED that exploded the vehicle in front of them three months ago. Soldier feels that he is to blame for the deaths of his friend and the only NCO in the PLT he liked. His attitude towards the local population has tanked and he feels hopeless and vulnerable. He knows his death is around the corner so he’d rather know his death than have someone plan it for him. During the mission the UMT is confronted by a Team leader that points out that he needs to speak with an Afghan village elder and the patrol needs to seek cover.  .

***Soldier will have full combat load. Soldiers attitude is not certain and actions of the UMT will determine the level of suicidal ideation.

TLO, ELO, or Learning Step/Activity

UMT will incorporate Suicide Intervention/Prevention while performing Religious Cultural Affairs (RCA) in scenario exercise.

Procedures:

Given FRAGO conducting RCA UMTs will move out with tactical gear to perform RCA. During exercise one of the Soldiers assisting with the security initiates a conversation with the UMT. Observer Controller and Suicide Intervention Trainer can conclude and re-enforce the conversation by quickly presenting the signs of depression and hopelessness discussed below.


SCENARIO EXERCISE SHEET NO. 2 (SGT Ferrell)


Title:  Soldier in need of intervention-Soldier’s wife sent email with a divorce request.  


Introduction:  Soldier married his 19 year old girlfriend last year and have been having problems since he deployed six months ago. She emailed the night prior to the mission. Contained in the email was also the information that she is two months pregnant. Soldier has been very quite since the start of mission but has become  angry towards the locals. Wife was known to hang out with at the NCO club back at FT Humdrum…where the two met. During the mission the UMT is confronted by a Team leader that points out that he needs to speak with an Afghan village elder and the patrol needs to seek cover.

  

***Soldier will have full combat load. Soldier attitude is not certain and actions of the UMT will determine the level of suicidal ideation.

SCENARIO EXERCISE SHEET NO. 3 (SSG Neal)


Title:  Soldier in need of intervention-Soldier’s was raped and self-worth is at all-time low.


Introduction:  Soldier was raped two months ago by one of the Soldiers in the security team. She has told no one. She is married but has been seeing the Soldier sexual since deployment. Now that they are redeploying she informed the Soldier that she needs to break off the relationship. The male Soldier gave her a huge guilt trip, got angry and then raped her. She is terrified because she has missed her period and may be pregnant. She feels disgusted with herself and has no future. During the mission the UMT is confronted by a Team leader that points out that he needs to speak with an Afghan village elder and the patrol needs to seek cover.  


***Soldier will have full combat load. Soldier attitude is not certain and actions of the

UMT will determine the level of suicidal ideation.

Title:  Soldier in need of intervention-Soldier’s mother and daughter die in a traffic accident

leaving her alone.


Introduction:  Soldier had a child out of wedlock but her mother and her have been raising the little girl for the past two years. Her child is four. When the Soldier was a child her mother raised her alone as her father left them when she was five. She has nothing more than the two of them and now she has nothing left. During the mission the UMT is confronted by a Team leader that points out that he needs to speak with an Afghan village elder and the patrol needs to seek cover. 

 

***Soldier will have full combat load. Soldier attitude is not certain and actions of the

UMT will determine the level of suicidal ideation.

SCENARIO EXERCISE SHEET NO. 5 (SSG Tran)


Title:  Soldier in need of intervention-Soldier was not making grades in college when MOBed to the Afghanistan.


Introduction:  Soldier was enrolled into a college and degree handpicked by his parents. Soldier started using Spice, a synthetic hallucinogenic drug before his deployment. Since deployment he was able to score some from his buddies. He hides his feelings behind the drug. He was caught by his squad leader three weeks ago and was given a blanket party and

threatened if he doesn’t knock it off. His parents found out about his grades and are giving him a guilt trip. During RCA the UMT is confronted by a Team leader that points out that he needs to speak with the Convoy commander and asks the UMT to keep an eye on one of the Soldiers.


***Soldier will have full combat load. Soldier attitude is not certain and actions of the

UMT will determine the level of suicidal ideation.
